This will have alot to do with Leadbelly as well--as we'll soon see...
I was hesitatnt to go to color in the Rivers and Hills post (below) for the same reason--the way it jerks us into the present--sometimes it feels as if the color had simply been poured over everything--a syrup or a salve--maybe we need the raw edges of the b&w--at least to help us see...
Talk about Eisenstein in Ivan the Terrible--where he shifted from b&w into technicolor...
